Medical experts and legal representatives are warning of a significant public health risk in West Africa’s Cape Verde archipelago after at least eight Britons reportedly died from complications related to severe gastrointestinal infections.

Since late 2025, the UK Health Security Agency has documented over 150 confirmed cases of shigella and salmonella linked to the islands. These bacterial infections often lead to debilitating symptoms such as fever, extreme stomach cramping, and chronic diarrhea, with some cases progressing to life-threatening conditions like sepsis.

Legal filings suggest that the victims include vulnerable groups, including infants as young as six months. Lawyers claim to have gathered evidence of systemic hygiene failures at specific hotel properties, including visual documentation of pest infestations and improperly prepared food.

The family of 64-year-old Elena Walsh, who died shortly after falling ill at a five-star resort last year, is among those seeking answers. Her son, Sean Walsh, described a rapid medical decline that ended in tragedy just two days after the onset of symptoms.

“I just want people to not go there. If people are willing to run that risk, then go for it but I’d say to people: don’t,” Sean Walsh said, reflecting on the speed of his mother’s deterioration.

Resort operator RIU Hotels and Resorts defended its practices, stating that its facilities adhere to rigorous international hygiene protocols. The company noted that their standards are regularly audited and certified by independent health and safety consultancies.
