General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. has partnered with Boeing subsidiary Spirit Defense to manufacture fuselages for the FQ-42 Vengeance Collaborative Combat Aircraft, an autonomous drone program awarded by the U.S. Air Force in June to accelerate scalable manufacturing capacity and bolster defense industrial supply chain resilience.

Spirit Defense joins the program as a structural design and manufacturing partner, contributing its engineering and advanced tooling systems from initial drafting through full assembly. The agreement is designed to scale production rates while removing single points of failure in the manufacturing pipeline.

Since its founding in 1992, GA-ASI has served as the sole manufacturer for prominent unmanned aircraft systems, including the MQ-9A Reaper, MQ-1C Gray Eagle, MQ-20 Avenger, and MQ-9B SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian lines. The new collaborative arrangement expands existing capacity to support higher output targets set by military planners.

David R. Alexander, President of GA-ASI, said:

“We are very excited to work with Spirit Defense. We have established our proven design, development, and manufacturing capabilities for the FQ-42. With Spirit Defense, we are increasing our capacity, and this provides the exact type of manufacturing resilience our U.S. Air Force customer is looking for as they ramp up CCA production. This type of collaboration represents the scalable industrial infrastructure that the Air Force and the U.S. Department of War expect from the industry.”

Keith Schrader, President and CEO of Spirit Defense, said:

“We are proud to bring our extensive manufacturing expertise and proven capabilities to this vital program. Our team recognizes the responsibility that comes with supporting critical national defense programs, and we are ready to deliver for our customer and the warfighter in the field.”

Modular Architecture and Autonomy Systems

The FQ-42 is a purpose-built unmanned combat jet developed under U.S. Air Force initiatives for semi-autonomous fleet operations. Its modular open-system architecture enables rapid swapping and upgrading of mission avionics and autonomy software without requiring structural overhauls.

GA-ASI has validated the underlying software architecture through multi-platform live flight demonstrations. The software provides the foundation for human-machine teaming, enabling autonomous aircraft to collaborate directly with crewed fighters in contested operational zones.

Global Gambit Series Expansion

GA-ASI is in ongoing discussions with multiple foreign militaries interested in procuring variants from its modular Gambit Series. The uncrewed jet family builds on engineering work from the FQ-42, the XQ-67A Off-Board Sensing Station, and the MQ-20 Avenger.

The Gambit platform is optimized for specialized roles, including electronic warfare, suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), destruction of enemy air defenses (DEAD), and stand-off precision strikes. Foreign buyers will also have the option to incorporate indigenous manufacturing lines, sensors, and weapons suites into the airframe.
